GIS Roundtable Discussion and Talk: Dr. Jeanne L. Tsai, Nov 11
Please join us on Friday, November 11 at 16:00 for a roundtable discussion and at 17:00 for the fourth installment of our new GIS Talks lecture series. For this session, we will be joined by Dr. Jeanne L. Tsai from the Department of Psychology of Stanford University.
Part I, a roundtable discussion with GIS students will take place in Room D of the 19th floor of Boissonade Tower from 16:00 to 16:30.
Part II, Dr. Tsai’s research talk, will take place in G401 on the 4th floor of the Fujimi Gate Building from 17:00. Part II is open to both GIS and non-GIS students.
Dr. Tsai’s research talk will cover the following topic:
Despite the fact that social media is quickly becoming the primary form of communication across the globe, researchers still know little about the role that culture plays in this communication. In this talk, Dr. Tsai will first describe decades of research documenting cultural differences in ideal affect (the affective states that people value and ideally want to feel).
She will then present current work suggesting that these cultural differences in ideal affect are reflected in the types of affective content that people produce and are most influenced by in others’ posts on social media.
Finally, she will discuss future research directions as well as the implications these differences might have for our understanding of the effects of social media on well-being, political polarization, and the spread of misinformation world-wide.
