Renewal of period of stay for those living in Japan *Applications will begin in January 2026
If you have decided to enroll at Hosei University and have completed payment of the admission fees, please apply to the university for an extension of your period of stay from the link below. You may apply for renewal starting three months prior to your current period of stay expiring.
*Those who wish to renew their period of stay before enrolling must submit a "Letter of Acceptance" when applying to the Immigration Bureau. GEC office will send this to undergraduate students along with their residence renewal documents. Graduate students should request an issuance from the graduate school they plan to enroll in. After receiving the Letter of admission, they can apply for an extension of their period of stay.
*If you have moved to a new address due to enrollment, please complete your resident registration at your local government office and get the new address information on the back of your residence card before submitting the following application. Also, please refer to the "Procedures for living in Japan: Moving checklist" on this page.
Additionally, if your income in Japan this fiscal year is approximately 1 million yen or less, you can apply for a reduction in your national health insurance premiums when you complete the procedures for moving in at your local government office, and your health insurance premiums will be reduced by approximately 20 to 70 percent depending on your income.
Documents required for a ‘Notification of the Accepting Organization’
If you attend another school in Japan and enter Hosei University immediately after graduation from that school, you need to submit the following notification to Immigration Bureau. (No notification is required if you have already submitted a notification at the time of the graduation from your previous school.)
- Notification of the Accepting Organization
- Not required for those who have already applied for renewal period of your stay at Hosei.

For those who lives abroad and have not yet obtained “Student” status, or for those who are in Japan with a short-term visitor visa
All international students have to obtain “Student” status by applying a Certificate of Eligibility, COE and need to apply for a visa at Japanese Embassy/ Consulate general in your country.
For those who have not applied for the visa and wish to ask for the proxy application, please contact Global Education Center, gso@hosei.ac.jp as soon as possible.
It will take about two months to issue COE. The delay of your application may causes you not arriving in Japan by the time of the entrance ceremony.
Please keep in your mind that all procedures regarding the residence card need plenty of time.
Please note that those entering from government-designated countries will need a tuberculosis-free certificate from a designated screening medical institution when applying for a Certificate of Eligibility.
