Online Language buddy Project with Hosei University, Japan

Hosei University offers Online Language Buddy Project between students at overseas partner universities and students at Hosei University.

Description

You will be paired with a student(s) at Hosei University, and you can enjoy the conversations in both English and Japanese with your buddy for six weeks or more. You can arrange your own exchange times and how to proceed with the exchange with your buddy. Any staff members do not attend the meetings. It is important for you to cooperate with your buddy not only to learn Japanese but also to support your buddy’s English learning.

Period

This project will be offered runs twice a year (spring／fall).

  • For the fall of 2024: Monday, October 21st, 2024 – Friday, November 29th, 2024*Application closed
  • For the spring of 2025: Friday, March 28th, 2025 – Thursday, May 8th, 2025
  • You can arrange exchange dates as you and your buddy like.

Number and time of exchange meetings

At least 4 times during the project period, with each video/audio exchange meetings lasting around 60 minutes (Japanese/English).

  • You can arrange the online platforms (Zoom, LINE, Instagram) as you and your buddy like.

Undergraduate and graduate students at partner universities of Hosei University

Language requirement

All Japanese levels welcome

  • N4 or higher recommended
  • You do not need to submit any language proficiency tests scores to participate in this project.

How to apply

Application period(spring of 2025) : Wednesday, January 15th – Sunady, February 16th

  • When we are oversubscribed, there will be a lottery.
  • In the case of a large number of applications, application may be closed before the deadline.

Notes

  1. Refrain from canceling after submitting an application.
  2. You may be paired up with 2 or more Hosei students / other international students depending on the number of applicants.
  3. You can participate in the project for free.
  4. Use English and Japanese for the same amount of time during the exchange meetings.
  5. Keep in mind that your buddy is not your “teacher” and that this is a peer exchange. Cooperate and try to have fun with them.
  6. Make sure that you have a stable internet connection before you start video/audio exchange meetings with your buddy.
  7. Information above is subject to change.
  8. The certificate of participant will be issued upon request.
  9. Please note that the information you provided in the application form will be shared with your buddy(s) and staff members at your university upon their request.
