Extension of Period of Stay (For students already residing in Japan)

If you have been officially admitted to Hosei University and have completed your enrollment fee payment, please apply for the extension of your status of residence through the link below. Please note that you can apply for the extension starting 3 months before your current status of residence expires.

  • If you wish to renew your period of stay before enrolling, you will need to submit an "Letter of Acceptance / Letter of admission".  Please contact the office of the faculty or graduate school you plan to enroll in to request one.  Once you receive the letter, please apply for the extension of your period of stay.

  • If you have moved due to your enrollment, please apply for the extension of your period of stay ONLY AFTER registering your new address at the local municipal office and having it updated on your residence card. In addition, please check the "Procedures for Living in Japan: Moving Checklist" provided at the bottom of this page.

  • For those planning to move: If your moving date is approaching soon, please apply for an extension of your period of stay after moving, but while your current period of stay is still valid.
If your planned moving date is still some time away, or if your current period of stay is close to expiring, please consult the Immigration Services Agency regarding the appropriate timing for your application for an extension of your period of stay.
As a general rule, your new residence card will be issued by the immigration office where you submitted your application. If there is a possibility that you will need to receive your new residence card after moving, be sure to consult the immigration office when submitting your application and follow their instructions. After receiving your new residence card, please be sure to visit the municipal office of your new place of residence and have your new address recorded on the card, whether you have already completed your resident registration or not. Please also refer to the “Procedures for Living in Japan: Moving Checklist” provided below on this page. If you move while your application for an extension of your period of stay is under review, please notify the immigration office where you submitted your application of your new address by telephone or in person. If you fail to notify them, you may not be able to receive the official notification of your examination results.

The Specified Residence Card (Integrated with My Number Card)

Starting June 14, 2026, the “Specified Residence Card,” which integrates the Residence Card and the My Number Card into a single card, will come into operation.
All new arrivals to Japan are initially issued a standard residence card (new-style) at the airport.
If you wish to obtain a Specified Residence Card integrated with the My Number Card, please apply for the change when you register your residence at your local municipal office.

How to Switch from a Conventional/New-Style Residence Card to a Specified Residence Card

  • Applying at the Immigration Bureau:
During status procedures: When applying for an extension of your period of stay, a change of status of residence, etc.
If you have no upcoming immigration applications planned for the time being: You can apply for a reissuance of residence card due to request for exchange.
  • Applying at your Local Municipal Office (City/Ward Office): When registering your residency upon arrival in Japan, or when moving in.

Payment of Social Insurance Premiums

To prevent non-payment of National Health Insurance and National Pension premiums by foreign residents, a system for sharing payment information between the Immigration Services Agency of Japan and the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare will be introduced in June 2027.  As a general rule, those with overdue or unpaid premiums will not be granted changes or extensions to their status of residence. Please be extra careful not to fall behind on your payments.

1.National Health Insurance ( 国民健康保険 )
All international students with a "Student" status of residence are required to enroll in the National Health Insurance system.
Approximately one to two months after completing resident registration with your local municipality, you will receive a payment notice for National Health Insurance premiums by mail.
If your income in Japan for the previous year was approximately 1,000,000 yen or less, you can apply for a premium reduction at your local municipal office. Depending on your income, your premiums may be reduced by approximately 20% to 70%. If this applies to you, please make sure to apply for the reduction when you enroll in the insurance.

2.National Pension ( 国民年金 )
Regardless of nationality, all residents in Japan aged between 20 and 59 are required to enroll in the National Pension system and pay premiums.
Students may apply for the "Special Payment System for Students" (学生納付特例制度)", which allows pension premium payments to be postponed while you are a student.
For more information and application procedures, please consult your local municipal office.
