Insurance for your student life

National Health Insurance

All international students with residence status "Student" are required to enroll in the National Health Insurance.

The enrolling can be done at the insurance counter of the city office where you are registered as a foreign resident.
If you accompany your family, please be sure to enroll every family member. At that time, you will need to bring your residence card and pay insurance premiums.
There is a system that allows insurance premiums to be reduced by 20% to 70% for those income in Japan in the previous year was below a certain amount. For more information, please ask at the National Health Insurance Division.

If the head of the household is not registered as a resident in Japan as of January 1st of the year prior to the year in which insurance premiums are levied, please note that depending on the local government where you live, you may be required to pay approximately one year's worth of insurance premiums in advance.

After joining the National Health Insurance, when receiving treatment at a medical institution in Japan, be sure to bring your "My Number Health Insurance Card (registered My Number card for use as an insurance card)" or "Eligibility Confirmation Certificate." Then 70% of the total medical expenses will be covered by the insurance and your payment will be just 30%. In addition, if medical expenses become high due to hospitalization, you may be able to receive subsidies. Please contact the insurance counter of the ward or city hall where you live.

If your family member is a public servant or company employee in Japan and you are enrolled in a mutual aid association or health insurance as a dependent, you do not need to enroll in the National Health Insurance.

The Japanese government will reflect the payment status of social insurance, like National Health insurance, premiums in the residency examination.

If you fail to pay social insurance premiums, it is likely to be disadvantageous to your application for a residence permit in the future.

The payment slip will be sent to you by postal mail from your city office. Do not leave it or throw it away just because you do not understand it. If you are unsure, ask your city office and be sure to pay it. In addition to using a payment slip, you can also set up automatic withdrawals from your bank account (direct debit).

Personal Accident Insurance for Students   Pursuing Education and Research(“Gakkensai”)

At our university, undergraduate and graduate students are covered by the above insurance in preparation for accidents occurring during their educational and research activities. The insurance covers injuries (but does not cover illness) that occur during regular classes, university events, extracurricular activities, and in university facilities. Please refer to the following page for a general description of the insurance coverage and the departments that handle it.

Comprehensive Insurance for Students Lives Coupled with “Gakkensai”

During the years of study, students might encounter accidents or fires. Accidents that occur during classes and on university premises can be covered by aforementioned “Personal Accident Insurance for Students Pursuing Education and Research(“Gakkensai”)”.
However, this insurance does not cover international students against accidents that occur during part-time jobs or any other troubles that students encounter while off the university premises. And students will have to limit their part-time work during the treatment of their injury.
Students might also encounter unexpected accidents, such as a fire or a water leakage, resulting in damaged apartments, boarding houses etc. In such cases, students will have to solve their own legal and financial problems.
Hosei university recommends ‘Comprehensive Insurance for Students Lives Coupled with “Gakkensai”’ to cover these accidents.
However, this insurance may not necessary if you already are covered by other accident insurance, and that insurance sufficiently covers injuries and other troubles that may occur during your stay as a student in Japan.
Enrollment procedures are carried out every year. For more information, please follow the guidance of new academic year.
