Otsukimi Event at the G-Lounge

2026.10.22

On October 22, the Hosei University Buddy System held an Otsukimi event dedicated to the Japanese autumn tradition of moon viewing at the G-Lounge. About 30 participants, both buddies and exchange students, gathered for food, games and conversation.

Treats, Games and Origami

Guests were offered a variety of treats: dango, a traditional Otsukimi sweet; assorted cookies; and matcha-flavored KitKats, a flavor closely associated with Japan. Drinks included matcha, juices and teas. Trying matcha KitKats and dango at the same table was a small taste of Japanese sweets, both traditional and modern.
Participants formed four groups, played several games and talked with each other. Everyone also made origami moon rabbits, the most recognizable symbol of Otsukimi: in Japanese folklore, the rabbit lives on the moon and pounds mochi. Students chose their own paper patterns, so every moon rabbit turned out different and colorful.

Quiz and Prizes

The buddies also prepared an engaging quiz about the Otsukimi tradition, and the three participants with the most correct answers won prizes. At the end, we took a group photo with a poster decorated with paper stars, on which everyone wrote their feedback on the event. The evening showed how a traditional holiday can bring exchange students and local buddies together. Thank you to the HUBs team for organizing it!
