In 1983 I was a professor at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. I applied to HIF to obtain funds so that I could live in Japan for 6 months to work with Professor Ando Shiro in the Mathematics Department to translate my book How to Read and Do Proofs into Japanese.
During my visit to Hosei, we completed the translation which was publishe d by Kyoritsu Shuppan. I also finished writing similar books for high school students . While completing other research on optimization
problems, I gave research lectures at various universities throughout Japan. I should add that this visit to Japan was on e of the best experiences in my life and I am very grateful for having had that opportunity.
I am a Professor of Operations in the Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. I teach mathematical courses for MS students ( math modeling, Python
programming) and also for MBA students (mathematical model ing and statistics).
I do basic research in optimization by developing and improving algorithms for solving linear and nonlinear programming problems as well as in combinatorial optimization I also use these tools together
with mathematical modeling, analysis and computer simulations to derive insights that are applicable to broad classes of complex systems (such as how much central control is beneficial for system performance) and to study the role of leadership and its impact on the performance of systems of human
interaction. I hav e also developed systematic methods for teaching mathematical proofs
and reasoning, computer programming, and operations research.
